On November 4, 2008, the United States of America will hold its 55th consecutive quadrennial election for President and Vice President of the United States. The United States is no longer black and white, but rather a great tapestry of colors. Among such are the Hispanic population which outnumber African-Americans and represent the largest minority. However, not all Hispanics are legal immigrants. According to Hispanic Magazine, there are 12 million illegal immigrants in the United Stated that could become legal resident if the pay fines, learned English and met other conditions.
Whatever side of the debate you find yourself on, it is very important for you to vote. Both the 2000 and 2004 elections were very intense and close races, and this year will be the same. Senator Barack Obama expressed it best when he said “This election could well come down to how many Latinos turn out to vote.”
At the Miss Florida Latina Pageant we do not endorse any particular candidate, but do urge you to vote. Our objective is to instill cultural pride, self esteem and leadership qualities among young Latina women. Part of being a leader is taking the step to shape the history of this country with your vote. We invite you to take a part in our program, which is unlike any other Pageant out there. We provide an opportunity for Latinas to advance in their careers and personal goals by learning of their heritage, developing self esteem and networking, thus having launched the careers of other young Latinas and helped our titleholders achieve success in everyday life.
