A few years ago, my son Josh and I had a chance of a lifetime to hunt the infamous King Ranch in South Texas. A friend we met, who has since passed away, arranged an after Thanksgiving hunt, 3-days and two nights. The accommodations and food were spectacular; our guide was top notch and was very familiar with the terrain.
Gearing up at the sporting good store is almost as much fun as the actual hunt itself. Spending time with my son is really all I cared for; I work very hard so playing hard goes without question. As I saw the excitement building up in my sons face, I could not help but think of myself at that age. Although my Dad was great, he worked a lot and hardly spent any time with me; one of my eldest brothers was the person who always took me fishing, hunting, and swimming...things my Dad never got a chance to do with us. After my brother's death, I felt like I had lost a father. However, you know what, my memories of him are what kept me strong and helped me get over his death eventually.
My son and I made memories that will last a lifetime, and stories we will get to share with our family for years to come. I am glad we took our video and digital camera. Certainly, one of the best times of my life.
This upcoming Fathers' Day, take some time to spend with your children; memories are sometimes all we need to get us through tough times-not only for ourselves as fathers, but for our children as well.
