Most people know John Walsh as the dedicated host of "America's Most Wanted" (amw.com), the man whose groundbreaking television program has helped take down nearly 1,000 dangerous fugitives in the past 20 years. But it's not the career that he envisioned for himself. July 27, 2006 will go down in history as the day that changed how America protects its children from sexual predators. At a ceremony in the Rose Garden, President George W. Bush signed a new, tough-as-nails law to track and apprehend convicted sex offenders who disappear after their release from prison. The date wasn't chosen randomly. It was exactly 25 years earlier that John Walsh and his wife Revé suffered the most horrendous loss that any parents could endure: the abduction and murder of their beautiful six-year-old son, Adam. Since that day in 1981, John has dedicated himself to fighting on behalf of children and all crime victims. As a result, thousands of victims have found justice, and dozens of abducted children have been safely brought home. The new law signed by President Bush is also a result of John's fight. It's called "The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act." Most people know Walsh as the dedicated host of "America's Most Wanted" (amw.com), the man whose groundbreaking television program has helped take down nearly 1,000 dangerous fugitives in the past 20 years. But it's not the career that he envisioned for himself. Born in Auburn, New York and educated at the University of Buffalo, Walsh moved to Florida with his wife Revé, and was living the American Dream. He was a successful businessman, building high-end luxury hotels and building his life. But after Adam's murder, everything changed. The Walsh family's tragic story woke up a nation to the danger of child predators after NBC aired two movies about their life. "Adam," in 1983, and "Adam: His Song Continues" in 1986, dramatized the incredible heartbreak and then resilience of the Walshes. In a bold and courageous move, the network ran a roll call of missing children at the end of the movies, leading to the recovery of 65 children. John and Revé Walsh's experience taught them that the nation was in desperate need of leadership in the fight to protect children, and they decided to create something positive out of their personal tragedy. From the ad hoc organization they put together to help with the search for Adam, they established the Adam Walsh Child Resource Center, which eventually merged with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), which they co-founded in 1984. The NCMEC (missingkids.com / 1-800-THE LOST) provides invaluable resources to parents, children and law enforcement in the United States and internationally. The charity consistently receives an A+ rating for its ability to spend more than 90 cents of every dollar raised on programming. Its incredible public/private partnerships keep the NCMEC as a leading example of a highly respected and effective non-profit. Walsh's search for justice and his determination to never let Adam's death have been in vain led him to fight back like few other Americans ever have. Although he's never held political office, Walsh has been the driving force behind major pieces of child protection legislation. This hard work led to Walsh being honored five times by four presidents; Ronald Reagan (twice), George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. One of Walsh's proudest moments was when he and his wife Revé stood beside President George W. Bush, as the "Adam Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act" was signed into law on the 25th anniversary of Adam's murder. Although the Walshes have never gotten justice in their own case, thousands of crime victims have, thanks to John and Revé's never ending dedication to fighting back. Law enforcement has also embraced Walsh. He's been honored numerous times by many local, state and federal agencies. In addition to being named "Man Of The Year" by both the US Marshals and the FBI, the US Marshals also made Walsh an honorary Marshal. Walsh is only the third man to have received this honor in the organization's two hundred year history. Walsh is the best-selling author of three books: Tears Of Rage, No Mercy & Public Enemies. He also recently teamed up with the creator of "Baby Einstein," Julie Clark, to create a series of DVDs called "The Safe Side." The two DVDs, "Stranger Safety" and "Internet Safety" (thesafeside.com), have been lauded as exceptional resources for parents and kids in dealing with predators in the real world and online. John Walsh lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Revé. They were blessed with three more children after Adam: Meghan, Callahan and Hayden. "> ....>

My wife Revé and I had no idea what to do. In an instant, our lives were turned completely upside down. We just began beating on doors asking for help. We called anyone and everyone. It felt as if we were in charge of the investigation. While we feared for our son's safety, we were also angry at the system that was supposed to protect our son and help us. Adam's abduction was our private hell -- but it was not an isolated incident. Life is an obstacle course for children in America today. Sadly, stranger abduction cases are just the tip of the iceberg. Physical and psychological violence and abuse, abduction, molestation, and sexual exploitation are all overwhelming in magnitude yet largely unrecognized and underreported From the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children With viewers' help America's Most Wanted has helped reunite abducted children with their parents and put lots of perverts behind bars. But we're only on TV for 1 hour a week. NCMEC is there 24/7. Since 1984, they've handled 1.8 million calls, trained more than 180,000 professionals, distributed more than 28 million copies of publications, worked 94,000 missing-child cases, and helped recover 78,000 missing children.:.. .. .. Teenagers today are experiencing many of life's triumphs -- and trials. In the US, 89 percent of teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 say they have been in dating relationships, and many of them are caught in a devastating cycle of violence. What's even more devastating is that many teens don't even realize that they are in an abusive relationship and sometimes even rationalize their partner's actions. He bought me flowers. He wrote me sweet notes. He said he was sorry. He said he loved me. Now, America's Most Wanted is hoping to bring awareness to the issue of teen dating violence and empower victims to get help. What Is Teen Dating Violence? Dating Violence is a violent act or a pattern of violent behavior that someone uses against a girlfriend or boyfriend. It can occur in both casual dating relationships and serious, long-term relationships. Dating violence can occur in heterosexual and homosexual relationships. Whether the victim is male or female, violence and abuse are not acceptable. Teen dating violence is a serious issue. One out of every four teens reports experiencing some kind of abuse in their romantic relationships. Young women aged 16 to 24 are the most at risk of domestic violence of any age group. The most obvious sign of dating violence is physical abuse, but teen dating violence can take many forms: Yelling Controlling behaviors Limiting access to family and friends Threatening Name calling Obsessive phone calling, paging or texting Extreme posessiveness "It was my first relationship...so I just went with it. I thought that was the way relationships worked. " Know The Signs Often, because teens in abusive relationships are experiencing the dating world for the first time, they do not know that their own relationship is unhealthy. Here are some signs that you may be experiencing dating violence even if you are not being physically abused. You may need to talk to a trusting adult if your boyfriend or girlfriend is exhibiting one of the following behaviors: Gets angry when you hang out with other friends or people of the opposite sex Bosses you around Controls what you wear Often gets in fights with other people or loses his or her temper Pressures you to have sex or to do something sexual that you don't want to do Swears at you or uses mean language Uses drugs and alcohol, and tries to pressure you into doing the same thing Blames you for his or her problems, or tells you that it is your fault that he or she hurt you Insults you or tries to embarrass you in front of other people Makes you feel scared of their reaction to things Always wants to know where you are going and who you are with Preteens and teens in abusive dating relationships may be embarrassed or afraid to talk about the issue. So, for parents, guardians and teachers here are some warning signs that something may be wrong in a teen relationship. Isolation from family and friends Suspicious bruises or injuries Loss of interested in activities and hobbies that were once enjoyable Making excuses for a dating partner's behavior Noticeable changes in eating or sleeping patterns, or alcohol or drug use Loss of self-confidence If you are worried about a teen you know, learn to recognize the warning signs and if necessary, get help. For Boys Only Violence is a difficult subject for many to talk about. But domestic violence is an especially hard subject for young men to discuss. While the U.S. Department of Justice reports that more than 85% of all relationship abuse victims are female and most abusers are male, men, too, can be victims of domestic violence. In society, boys are surrounded by messages telling them to "be a man," "be strong," "don't cry," "be in control," and "know how to fight." But it is important for young men to know that they can stop violence in dating relationships. When kids see friends act abusively and don't speak up, it shows abusers that their behavior is okay. Abusers may not realize that their behavior is inappropriate. It is important for kids to get involved and speak out against violence they witness. To Learn More Violence is not a sign of affection and no one deserves to be abused. If someone you're dating abuses you, it will happen again. Get help. Tell someone. "Over the years AMW has helped capture 15 fugitives from the FBI's Most Wanted List and 24 from the U.S. Marshal's Most Wanted. Review the current fugitives on these two infamous lists, and help us put them behind bars."

    Sobre mi familia:
The program's greatest achievements and proudest moments - our greatest captures, most notorious fugitives, and the heartwarming tales of victims who fought back, and viewers who made a difference. 2/7/88 – America's Most Wanted debuts on the seven Fox owned-and-operated stations (New York, Boston, Washington, Chicago, Houston, Dallas and Los Angeles). 2/11/88 – Four days after the show's debut, AMW marks its first capture as the FBI announces the arrest of one of its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives, David James Roberts, in New York City, as a direct result of viewer tips to the program. 5/7/89 – AMW makes international news with the capture of New Jersey mass murderer John Emil List, at large for nearly 20 years. 4/25/90 – AMW Host John Walsh is honored by President George H.W. Bush at a White House ceremony for his work on behalf of crime victims and missing children. 5/10/90 – AMW helps recover its first missing child, Nicole Ravesi, and aids in the arrest of her abductor, Kenneth Cole, her former babysitter. 10/5/91 – The FBI honors John Walsh with its highest civilian award – The Louise E. Peters Memorial Service Award, presented by the FBI and Society of Former Agents of the FBI. 5/25/96 – AMW broadcasts one of its greatest and proudest accomplishments: a reunion of the 20 children the show has helped recover. 11/9/96 – Following the cancellation of AMW, an outpouring of support from governors, law enforcement officials and viewers changes Fox's plan – and the nation's No. 1 crime-fighting show returns to the airways, kicking off its "debut" by capturing Alan Eugene White just 30 minutes after the show airs. 5/10/97 – AMW is the first show to bring the search for Andrew Cunanan nationwide. He was profiled six times on AMW before his body was found on a houseboat in Miami Beach, reportedly a suicide. John Walsh and his crew were on the scene when the discovery was made and John was the only member of the media who was allowed to enter the scene. 9/20/97 – Jack and Mona Volgares, wanted for the murder of Mona's 8-year-old daughter, Seleana Gamble, are arrested and their three other children recovered just 29 minutes after a segment about them airs on AMW. 1/8/01 – Stephen Edward Tatro, a self-proclaimed medicine man and accused killer, becomes the only fugitive ever captured by AMW twice. Six hours before the show aired on April 1, 2000, Tatro was captured when alert AMW viewers saw him featured on a promotional spot for the show. He was arrested but soon escaped. AMW went on the hunt again and in January 2001, tips led us to his hideout in the Arizona desert. 1/24/01 – A tip to AMW leads to the capture of the infamous "Texas 7." In December, 2000, seven dangerous convicts escaped from the state prison in Karnes City, Texas. They went on a crime spree, stealing an arsenal of weapons and killing a police officer on Christmas Eve. An AMW viewer in Colorado recognized the new tenants in his mobile home park as the fugitives, and their run from the law was over. 10/12/01 – At the request of President George W. Bush, AMW airs a special episode featuring the U.S. government's Most Wanted Terrorists, a list of 22 international fugitives identified in the wake of the 9-11 attacks. 4/23/02 – After a profile of accused child molester Michael Bliss airs on AMW, FBI agents and cops get a break in the case in the form of numerous AMW tips. They lead to a small motel in Los Angeles where the FBI "Most Wanted" fugitive is staying, and Bliss becomes AMW's 700th direct capture. 3/12/03 – Tips from AMW viewers lead to the recovery of Utah teenager Elizabeth Smart after a nationwide search. Elizabeth had been abducted from her bedroom nine months earlier. 7/2/04 – AMW's 800th Direct Result Capture. Richard Newman, accused of killing a man in a Toronto night club, seemed to drop off the face of the Earth. But AMW tips led U.S. Marshals to an apartment building in Brooklyn, N.Y. After Gooden attempted to shoot his way out of the building, the Marshals made their move and Gooden was taken into custody. 7/27/06 – President George W. Bush signs the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act into law in a ceremony at the White House, on the 25th anniversary of Adam Walsh's abduction and murder. Among other things, the act creates a national sex offender registry, and makes failing to register a federal crime. 8/9/06 – Marlon Morris, wanted for repeatedly raping and assaulting a 13-year-old girl just outside of Boston, becomes AMW's 900th direct result capture when tips lead to police to New Orleans, where he was hiding out.
